Danny Glover Shares Alzheimer's Diagnosis

Renowned American actor Danny Glover, 79, has disclosed that he has been living with Alzheimer's disease for multiple years. In an interview with NBC that aired on Wednesday, Glover stated that he received the diagnosis shortly after being awarded an honorary Oscar in 2022.

Despite the challenges, Glover mentioned that he remains active, acknowledging that while his movements, speech, and memory have slowed, he has adapted to the condition. "I can live with it in a sense," Glover remarked during the pre-taped interview. "I'm sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing."

Family Joins in Raising Awareness

Glover, a four-time Emmy winner celebrated for his roles in the Lethal Weapon series and The Color Purple, appeared in the interview with former NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt on The Today Show. He and his family expressed their desire to help destigmatize the disease by openly discussing his condition.

"I think it's really important for him to have control of his own narrative, of his own life story," his daughter, Mandisa, commented. "That's really important. And the time is now. What better time but now for him to speak for himself?"

Alzheimer's Impact and Disparities

Glover is among approximately 7 million individuals in the U.S. over the age of 65 currently living with Alzheimer's disease, a form of dementia that impacts memory, thinking, and behavior. Symptoms typically intensify over time, eventually interfering with daily activities.

According to the Alzheimer's Association in the U.S., older Black Americans, including Glover, are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia compared to older white Americans. The reason for this disparity has not yet been identified by research.

A Distinguished Career and Advocacy

During the NBC interview, Glover reflected on his extensive acting career, which commenced in his early 20s and includes over 170 acting credits. He gained significant recognition in the 1980s as Detective Roger Murtaugh alongside Mel Gibson's Martin Riggs in the Lethal Weapon films. His filmography also includes notable works like Places in the Heart (1984) and The Color Purple (1985).

Beyond his acting, Glover is known for his dedication to social justice, having established a production company focused on developing and funding politically relevant films. "We have challenges in the world," Glover stated in the interview. "I think art becomes a reframe, a way of looking at that, you know?"
