Canada has been confirmed as a participant in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, marking the first new country to join the competition since 2015.

Canada Joins Eurovision Family

Organizers have announced that Canada will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest starting in 2027. This development makes Canada the first new nation to enter the competition since Australia's inclusion in 2015. The announcement follows a period of controversy for the contest, with several long-standing participants, including Ireland and Spain, withdrawing over Israel's involvement in a previous year.

Path to Participation

The opportunity for Canada to compete emerged after its national public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, secured full membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The EBU is the organization responsible for staging the annual music event. Previously, CBC had held an 'associate member' status.

"Canada's voice in this community makes us stronger," stated Noel Curran, Director General of the EBU, welcoming the new addition.

The Canadian government had previously indicated its interest in Eurovision participation, with reports in November mentioning efforts to explore joining the contest. The government's budget also allocated C$150 million (£80 million) in funding for the broadcaster.

Canadian Connection to Eurovision

While Canada is new to the competition as a country, Canadian artists have a history with Eurovision. Quebec-born singer Céline Dion notably won the contest in 1988 while representing Switzerland with her song "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi." Other Canadian vocalists, such as Natasha St-Pier (representing France in 2001) and La Zarra (representing France in 2023), have also performed on the Eurovision stage.

Organizers have indicated that Canada is expected to make its debut in the semi-finals, which will be hosted in Bulgaria in 2027. Details regarding the selection process for Canada's entry are anticipated to be revealed by CBC/Radio-Canada later this year.

Non-European Participants

Canada is not the first non-European country to participate in Eurovision. Nations like Israel and Australia are regular competitors, and Morocco also took part in the 1980 contest. The rules of Eurovision permit participation from countries whose broadcasting organizations are members of the EBU.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The 2027 contest is scheduled to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, following Bulgarian pop star Dara's victory with her song "Bangarang!" in the 2026 event. Uncertainty remains regarding the return of countries that boycotted the 2026 competition, which included Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain. However, Eurovision director Martin Green previously expressed openness to their return, emphasizing the importance of dialogue with absent members.
