Alfie Watts' Vehicle Targeted in Cardiff

Alfie Watts, known for his victory on the BBC's 'Race Across the World', recently reported a car break-in and the theft of his laptop in Cardiff. The incident occurred shortly before he was scheduled to speak with young people about mental health and resilience, causing significant frustration for Watts.

The Incident and its Impact

The 22-year-old explained that he had parked his vehicle for approximately 20 minutes in Howard Place, Cardiff, on Tuesday evening when an individual broke a window and took his laptop bag from under the seat. Watts described the act as opportunistic, suggesting the perpetrator might have taken a chance on finding valuables.

The stolen laptop contained important presentation materials that Watts utilizes for his school talks, which focus on themes of positivity, resilience, and mental health. Fortunately, all the content on his laptop was backed up online, ensuring that his three scheduled talks, including one at Mount Stuart Primary School in Cardiff Bay, could proceed as planned.

Previous Challenges and Ongoing Advocacy

This incident marks the third theft Watts has experienced in the past two months, adding to his dismay. He previously had his mobile phone stolen in London and an earlier laptop taken during a bag theft in Santiago, Chile. Despite these setbacks, Watts emphasized that the recent incident in Cardiff does not reflect on the people of Wales or the city itself, calling it simply "an enormous frustration."

Watts gained recognition for his extensive travels, covering over 9,300 miles (15,000km) across eastern Asia during his 'Race Across the World' journey with friend Owen Wood. Unlike his recent experiences, he encountered no theft issues during the competition.

He has been actively sharing his journey and experiences with a large online following, using platforms like Instagram to document both positive and challenging times. Last year, he spent 192 days traveling globally and recently raised £50,000 for the mental health charity Young Minds by undertaking a tuk-tuk journey from London to Norway.

Police Response

Watts is currently on a tour visiting 35 schools across the UK, aiming to inspire young people with messages of perseverance, kindness, and self-belief. He reported the incident to the police, who informed him that while they would review CCTV footage, there was limited action they could take. South Wales Police confirmed receiving Watts' report but stated that no suspects have been identified. They issued a reminder about the prevalence of opportunistic theft from vehicles and the importance of not leaving belongings visible.
