PlayStation's Future: Digital-Only Games by 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment has declared that new PlayStation games will no longer be issued on physical discs from January 2028. While games will still be available for purchase in retail stores, these will consist of digital download codes rather than disc-based copies.

Consumer Concerns and Criticisms
The announcement has, however, generated some criticism, particularly regarding consumer rights and game preservation. Gaming journalist Vikki Blake described the change as a "body blow to consumer rights," expressing concerns for game conservation and for players with limited disposable income who rely on trading or lending physical games. Blake also pointed out the irony, recalling a past PlayStation advertisement that humorously highlighted the ease of sharing games on the PS4, contrasting it with Xbox's policies at the time.
Impact on Existing and Future Releases
Sony clarified that this change will not affect games already released or those slated for release before January 2028. Previously, gamers had voiced concerns about the digital-only release of Grand Theft Auto VI, noting that it would prevent them from lending or reselling the game. The BBC has reached out to Sony for comments on potential future mechanisms for transferring digital game ownership, but the company has not yet provided a response.
