Wimbledon Doubles Plans in Jeopardy
The highly anticipated reunion of tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams in the Wimbledon doubles competition faces uncertainty following an injury sustained by Serena. The sisters, who boast six doubles titles at the All England Club, were scheduled to compete together on a Grand Slam court for the first time since 2022 this Friday.
Injury During Singles Comeback
Serena Williams, 44, experienced a knee injury during her singles match against Australia's Maya Joint on Tuesday. Reports indicate her knee became swollen during her defeat, casting doubt on her fitness for the upcoming doubles event.
Official Statement Regarding Injury
Following her singles match, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion did not participate in her scheduled media obligations. Wimbledon organizers stated she was "not able to undertake" these duties. Her agent, Jill Smoller, clarified the situation, stating, "Serena tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams." Smoller added, "She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week."
