Swiatek Dominates Pliskova in Wimbledon Second Round

Iga Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon champion, continued her title defense by convincingly defeating former finalist Karolina Pliskova in straight sets to reach the third round. This victory marked a more composed performance from Swiatek compared to her opening match.

Her initial match on Tuesday against Taylor Townsend, which she won in three sets, was described by Swiatek as "really emotional." However, returning to action two days later, the world number three showcased a different demeanor, starting strongly against the 2021 runner-up, Pliskova.

"I'm feeling more stable today - and that's good," Swiatek shared with the crowd after her 6-1, 6-3 triumph. "The first round was really emotional for sure, but today I felt like it was another day in the office and I needed to be ready, be in charge and make good decisions. It is always better when you're able to think like that and it was a good day for me. I was consistent and I had a good level of focus, so I'm really happy with my performance."

A Blistering Start and Consistent Performance

Swiatek, a six-time major winner, demonstrated her dominance early in the match, securing 26 out of 35 points in the first set and losing only one of the initial 17 points. She quickly established a four-game lead. Despite a brief service hiccup in the fifth game, where she double-faulted twice allowing Pliskova to break back, Swiatek quickly regained her composure, clinching the first set in just 25 minutes.

She maintained control in the second set, despite Pliskova, a former world number one currently recovering from ankle surgery, breaking for a 2-0 lead. Swiatek's level on serve dipped momentarily, but Pliskova was unable to consolidate, double-faulting on break point in the subsequent game. Another costly double fault from Pliskova two games later gifted Swiatek another break. Swiatek then rediscovered her first-set form, winning six of the final seven games to secure victory in just 69 minutes.

Navratilova's High Praise and Swiatek's Modesty

Following her performance, 18-time major winner Martina Navratilova reportedly graded Swiatek's display as an A+. Swiatek acknowledged the compliment with humility:

"When legends like that say nice things about you, it means a lot. It is basically why you try to be the best tennis player possible, so that people appreciate it. I don't know if it was an A+ because at times it was a tricky game. I felt like I played so many dirty shots in that final game especially, I wasn't able to control them that much. So maybe not A+, more like B, I would say."

This victory extends Swiatek's impressive record of not losing before the third round at a Grand Slam since the 2019 US Open. She remains the sole woman to have reached the third round in all 26 Grand Slam events held this decade. Swiatek will now face Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in her next match.
