Severe Heat Wave Impacts July Fourth Celebrations
A significant heat wave has disrupted Independence Day events across the United States, including the prominent Great American State Fair. This event, organized by Freedom 250 and chaired by President Donald Trump, was affected as the nation prepared to celebrate its 250th anniversary of independence from Great Britain.
In excess of 185 million people, more than half of the U.S. population, found themselves under heat alerts. The National Weather Service warned of potential daily temperature records on Friday and Independence Day, with possibilities of monthly and all-time highs. Heat indices were expected to soar to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius) in certain areas.
Celebrations Disrupted Across the Nation
Numerous parades, concerts, and fireworks displays faced cancellations or postponements due to the extreme heat. The Great American State Fair, held on the National Mall in Washington, DC, was temporarily closed when temperatures climbed to 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Similar disruptions were reported in at least seven states, including Philadelphia, where the Salute to Independence parade was canceled after temperatures reached 103 degrees Fahrenheit, matching a record set in 1901.
Authorities issued warnings of potential fatalities due to the heat wave, advising those participating in outdoor activities over the holiday weekend to stay hydrated, seek shade, and remain vigilant for symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
Presidential Address Highlights Political Themes
During a speech at Mount Rushmore, President Trump marked the 250th anniversary with a stark warning about the threat of communism to American liberties. He described it as a more severe danger than historical events such as World War I and II, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11. Trump expressed concerns about a resurgence of 'communist menace' within the country, particularly among new arrivals who may hold ideologies contrary to American values.
His comments followed the recent success of four progressive candidates, including three democratic socialists, in Democratic primaries in New York City and Colorado, as well as other states such as Kentucky, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
President Trump's speech diverged from the traditionally unifying tone of previous Republican presidents' Independence Day addresses, taking place in the iconic setting of Mount Rushmore, home to the large carved faces of renowned American presidents.
