McLaren's Current Hurdles and Past Glories
Lando Norris, the McLaren driver, acknowledges the significant challenges his team has faced at the start of the current season. He describes the reliability issues as "dreadful" but notes that the car's pace has been "not terrible." Norris, however, accepts that the team's intensive efforts to secure a double championship last year, amidst strong competition from Max Verstappen and Red Bull, have contributed to their present difficulties.
"I'm happy I have the pain of this year for the glory of last," Norris stated in an interview with BBC Sport ahead of the British Grand Prix. He elaborated, "We still put a lot of effort into making sure we were ready for this year. And we're not as ready and as strong as we would have liked to have been."
Norris suggests that other teams, now performing well, were able to allocate more resources and focus towards the current season, a luxury McLaren couldn't afford given their championship pursuit. He views this as the "price you pay in a very competitive world," especially with significant regulation changes.
Performance and Reliability Concerns
McLaren's performance this season has seen them fluctuate between the second and fourth fastest teams, trailing pace-setters Mercedes. A potential victory in Miami, where Norris was leading, was lost due to a strategic error. Furthermore, a series of reliability issues, some shared with other Mercedes-powered teams and some specific to McLaren, have led to multiple retirements. As a result, Norris heads into his home race in fifth place in the championship, 92 points behind the leader.
Despite these setbacks, Norris maintains a degree of optimism. "Should have won in Miami. So it's not like we're having a dreadful season. It's been dreadful for one reason, reliability and issues. That's been the biggest letdown of the whole year," he explained. He believes that with perfect execution, podium finishes are still attainable.
Dedication to McLaren and Future Aspirations
Norris, who has spent his entire eight-year F1 career with McLaren, expresses a strong loyalty to the team. While acknowledging the frustration of not being able to defend his title effectively, his commitment to McLaren remains steadfast. He values the team environment and the relationships he has built, indicating a preference for happiness and stability over an unknown, potentially more successful, path elsewhere.
"I'll always try to be at a team that I can win with. And for a long time I've been with McLaren. I believed it could be McLaren," Norris affirmed. He added, "I would love to be [at McLaren for life]. I feel like I'm dedicated to them. They gave me my opportunity in the first place. We've won together. We want to win many more together."
Regarding speculation about Max Verstappen potentially joining McLaren, Norris dismissed the rumors, citing existing long-term contracts. He also stated he would welcome any top driver as a teammate, including Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, or Fernando Alonso, as it provides an opportunity to prove himself against the best.
Individual Performance and Rivalries
Norris is content with his own performance this year, believing it to be an improvement over last season. He currently leads his teammate Oscar Piastri in qualifying head-to-head. He also commented on the performance of Kimi Antonelli, highlighting the young driver's impressive start to his F1 career, and acknowledged the challenges faced by George Russell this season.
Looking ahead to the British Grand Prix, Norris admits that a repeat of his victory last year would require "a hell of a lot of luck." However, he remains enthusiastic about his home race, noting the unique sense of belonging and support he receives from the fans.
