Ukrainian Drone Attacks Trigger Fires at Russian Oil Facilities

Drone Strikes Escalate Tensions in Southern Russia

Recent overnight drone attacks carried out by Ukrainian forces have resulted in fires at multiple oil facilities in southern Russia, according to local officials. These incidents have increased pressure on Russia's fuel infrastructure, which is already under strain from ongoing Ukrainian strikes.

The Ilsky Oil Refinery, located in the Krasnodar region, was among the targets. The refinery, which has a processing capacity of around 138,000 barrels of oil per day, experienced fire outbreaks after drone debris fell in the Severskaya district, impacting private properties. This facility has been a recurrent target in the past.

Incidents in the Rostov Region

In the Rostov region, fires erupted at two fuel depots in the Azov district and the Taganrog sea port. Governor Yury Slyusar reported these incidents via Telegram. Preliminary reports from the Kyiv Post suggest the blaze in Taganrog likely originated at the Kurgannefteprodukt oil terminal, a key site for loading and unloading petroleum products onto seafaring vessels.

Taganrog's Mayor, Svetlana Kambulova, confirmed that evacuations took place in affected areas, with minor structural damage reported. Fortunately, no injuries were recorded.

Impact of Ongoing Strikes

These attacks are part of a broader strategy by Ukraine to target Russian energy infrastructure, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s financial and military capabilities. The sustained assaults have exacerbated fuel shortages in Russia, leading to longer queues at gas stations and increased fuel prices.

President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged these challenges, stating that efforts are underway to mitigate the shortages, though he maintains that the situation is not critical. The Russian government often attributes damage from drone attacks to debris from intercepted drones, whereas Ukrainian sources claim these are effective direct hits.

Response and Retaliation

Ukraine frames these attacks as a countermeasure against Russia's ongoing military operations, which have involved frequent strikes on Ukrainian civilian and energy sites since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that air defense units intercepted 376 Ukrainian drones overnight, including aircraft approaching the Moscow region.
