Details Emerge Regarding Victim's Employment with James Holder
A woman, who wishes to remain anonymous and is referred to as 'Gemma', has spoken out about being raped by Superdry co-founder James Holder. She revealed to the BBC that she was employed by Holder at the time of the assault and had to continue working for him in the days following the attack.
The incident occurred in May 2022, when Holder, 54, assaulted Gemma at her home after sharing work-related drinks. Holder, a multi-millionaire, was subsequently sentenced in May to eight years in prison for the rape, which was described in court as a "despicable act of sexual violence."
Return to Work After the Assault
Gemma recounted the fear and dread she experienced returning to work for a new business launched by Holder, who had departed Superdry in 2016. She described Holder's demeanor as unchanged, stating, "He did. Very much like he would have spoken to me the week before. As if nothing had happened."
Due to her legal right to anonymity, Gemma's professional connection to Holder could not be reported previously. However, in her first media interview, she clarified that she initially worked for Holder at Superdry in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, before transitioning to another one of his ventures.
Workplace Culture and Power Dynamics
While at Superdry, Gemma noted minimal direct interaction with Holder, describing his status as almost "celebrity-like." Her subsequent move to his new company brought her into closer contact, where she became increasingly aware of what she perceived as his "controlling" behavior. She characterized the work environment as one with "no room for mistakes" and where employees were constantly on "high alert." Gemma suggested this was a deliberate method to "command respect and a sort of allegiance to his agenda."
The Night of the Assault
The rape took place after a company gathering in Cheltenham. Gemma stated that while the early part of the evening was unremarkable, Holder's behavior shifted later. Although a taxi was arranged for Holder, he entered Gemma's pre-ordered taxi uninvited. Her intention was for him to continue to his own residence after dropping her off, but he ultimately ended up in her home. She explained that Holder initially fell asleep but then woke, beckoned her, and upon her refusal to join him, pulled her onto the bed and raped her.
During Holder's sentencing, Gemma conveyed to the court that he had deprived her of her choice, dignity, and body.
Aftermath and Reporting the Crime
The morning after the assault, Gemma expressed profound fear for her future, particularly given Holder was her employer. She felt destabilized and in "survival mode" upon returning to work. She described Holder's demeanor as a "power trip" and noted his apparent unaccountability, drawing parallels to power dynamics seen in other industries.
Gemma initially hesitated to report Holder due to his prominence in the industry and fears it could jeopardize her career. However, the liquidation of the business days after the rape proved to be a "blessing in disguise," removing him as her boss and alleviating the threat to her livelihood, thereby empowering her to report the crime.
Gemma believes that the fashion industry's culture facilitated Holder's actions. Research from the industry publication Drapers last year indicated that sexual harassment is a prevalent issue in fashion retail, often perpetrated by senior colleagues who wield power over victims' careers. She highlighted the male-dominated leadership structures and predominantly female workforce, suggesting this creates an environment where control and trust can be exploited, contributing to a "misogynistic behavior in the industry."
Moving Forward
Now, Gemma is focused on rebuilding her life and aims to empower other victims to report sexual assaults. She emphasized that the responsibility for the assault lies solely with Holder, stating, "I did not ask for what happened to me. That was not on me. That is completely his responsibility."
Detective Constable Elle MacLeod, who led the investigation, commended Gemma's bravery, suggesting she may have prevented others from becoming victims and demonstrating that "no one is above the law, regardless of your status, wealth, or power."
A spokesperson for Superdry clarified that James Holder resigned from the company in 2016 and his consultancy work concluded in 2019, asserting that the incident in 2022 occurred long after his association with Superdry ended. With the court case concluded, Gemma expressed a "sense of freedom" and stated that she wants Holder to be remembered "as a rapist - because that is what he is."
