A substantial forest fire, which ignited on Sunday, continues to challenge emergency services in the Fontainebleau area, located approximately 60 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of the French capital, Paris. As the fire escalated, a second, smaller inferno was reported the following day, exacerbating the situation. Combined, these fires have consumed an estimated 1,900 hectares (approximately 4,700 acres) of land. Arson Suspects Apprehended
In response to the unfolding crisis, two individuals have been taken into custody on suspicion of arson. Water-carrying planes and helicopters have been deployed to douse the fire from above, supplementing the efforts of personnel on the ground.
In an unprecedented move for the greater Paris region, four Canadair aircraft were deployed, alongside two additional water-bombing planes and three helicopters. These specialized aircraft were observed scooping water from the River Seine on Monday, executing a total of 187 water drops by the evening, as reported by Jean-Marc Sicard, commander of the rescue operations. The deployment of such a large aerial fleet underscores the extraordinary nature of the emergency.

So far this year, an estimated 32,000 hectares of land have been burnt in France, already surpassing the total area affected in 2025.
The Interior Minister further revealed that 59 individuals have been arrested nationwide on suspicion of starting fires this year, with some identified as repeat offenders. This statistic points to a persistent issue of deliberate fire-setting in various parts of France, complicating efforts to manage and prevent these environmental catastrophes.
