Suspect Identified in Monaco Explosion
An arrest warrant has been issued for a foreign national in connection with a parcel bombing in Monaco that resulted in serious injuries to three individuals. The Monaco prosecutor's office confirmed the suspect is no longer within the principality and an Interpol Red Notice is expected to follow.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred on Monday evening when surveillance footage captured an individual placing a package in the entrance hall of a building in Monaco. Shortly thereafter, an explosion took place as three people entered, causing injuries. Authorities are investigating the event as attempted murder, clarifying it is not being treated as a terrorist attack.
Following the explosion at an apartment complex near the French border, the suspect was observed fleeing towards Beausoleil, France. Initial reports suggested the suspect was male, but local media has indicated the person of interest might be a woman attempting to conceal her identity by wearing a black hat.
Official Response and Investigation
Monaco's public prosecutor, Stéphane Thibault, did not comment on the suspect's gender but acknowledged the swift cooperation between Monegasque and French police, which enabled the rapid identification of the individual suspected of carrying out the attack. An update on the investigation was anticipated on Friday.
"An arrest warrant has been issued for the suspect, who will be the subject of an Interpol Red Notice from this evening," the Monaco prosecutor's office stated on Thursday night.
Victims and Their Background
While Monaco authorities have not officially named the victims, local reports indicate the attack targeted Vadym Yermolaiev, 58, his partner, and his 13-year-old son. Yermolaiev, a wealthy real estate developer and Cypriot citizen, has resided in Monaco. He renounced his Ukrainian citizenship in 2019 and has significant business interests in the wine and alcohol sector in Russian-annexed Crimea. Since 2023, he has been subject to sanctions by the Ukrainian government. In 2020, Forbes magazine estimated his fortune at $230 million, ranking him as the 39th richest Ukrainian.
The three victims were hospitalized after the bombing. The two adults were initially in critical condition, though the man's condition improved by Wednesday. The woman's condition, however, had not yet stabilized. Prince Albert II of Monaco characterized the incident as a "heinous crime."
