Nationwide Commemoration for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Iran has commenced several days of public mourning and funeral processions for its former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. These events are taking place more than four months after his death in February, which officials attributed to strikes launched by the United States and Israel.
Funeral Arrangements and Public Response
The former Ayatollah's remains are scheduled to lie in state at Tehran's Grand Mosalla beginning Friday. His burial is planned for next Thursday in his hometown of Mashhad. According to reports from AFP, authorities anticipate that the funeral could attract up to 20 million mourners from across the country.
These ceremonies unfold as Iran and the United States maintain a delicate ceasefire, established after a preliminary agreement was reached in June to de-escalate their conflict. Khamenei's body will remain at the Grand Mosalla for three days, alongside the remains of other family members who also perished in the February strikes.
Official Events and City Preparations
An official funeral ceremony is slated for Saturday in Tehran. In preparation for the large-scale events, public and private offices in Tehran have been ordered to close from Saturday through Monday. Traffic restrictions will also be implemented, effectively shutting down much of the city center to private vehicles, as reported by AFP. Furthermore, Tehran's airspace will experience partial closures from Friday, leading to a full closure on Monday.
Following the ceremonies in Tehran, the former supreme leader's body will be transported to the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala before its final interment in Mashhad. Dignitaries from various nations, including Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are expected to attend the observances.
Ayatollah Khamenei was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba, who has not made a public appearance since assuming the role of supreme leader.
