Southern European countries are presently contending with a series of significant wildfires, prompting mass evacuations and posing threats to local infrastructure and events. France Mobilizes Against Pyrenees Fires, Impacts Tour de France
In southwestern France, specifically within the Pyrenees-Orientales department, approximately 10,500 individuals received evacuation orders due to a substantial wildfire. This particular blaze has already consumed over 4,600 hectares of land. The proximity and intensity of the fire have also necessitated alterations to the Tour de France cycling race. Authorities announced that the third stage, scheduled to traverse the Pyrenees on Monday, would proceed without spectators. This measure was implemented to mitigate risks associated with the fire.
Pierre Regnault de la Mothe, a regional prefect, conveyed his regret regarding the decision, stating that this would mark a unique instance of a Tour de France stage in France without public attendance. The 196-kilometer stage, extending from Spain into France, was restricted solely to riders and their support vehicles. Concurrently, hundreds of firefighters are actively engaged in combating another fire situated in a mountainous area of the Drome department in southeastern France.
Spain and Greece Face Ongoing Fire Challenges
Spain is also grappling with significant wildfires. In the northeastern Girona region, a blaze that ignited on Friday continued to burn uncontrolled into Monday. This fire has devastated nearly 2,200 hectares, endangering popular tourist destinations along the Costa Brava. The country has recently experienced temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in certain areas, intensifying concerns about the potential for further outbreaks.
Meanwhile, in Greece, a forest fire in the northern city of Thessaloniki impacted two factories, prompting local authorities to evacuate nearby areas and advise residents to keep their windows closed as a precautionary measure against smoke and ash.
Portugal Reports Progress, Sustains Heat Alert
Portugal has reported some success in its battle against wildfires, with a large blaze that had affected approximately 13,000 hectares of forest and scrubland in a northern district reportedly brought under control. Despite this progress, four regions across the country remained under a heat alert on Monday, indicating continued elevated risk.
